Josef Hoffmann Member of the Viennese Secession with the architect Otto Wagner he was a designer whose work, providing a boost and an essential geometric abstraction (his prevailing grids are particularly famous), opens the new century with a modernist view. For the Secession journal, Ver Sacrum, he executed illustrations featuring the Austrian Jugendstil. He also managed some preparations of the periodic exhibitions of the Viennese Secession and played an important role in the European launch of the Scottish Charles Rennie Mackintosh. In 1903 Hoffmann founded with Koloman Moser and Fritz Wärndorfer the Wiener Werkstätte, an association of designers, artists and producers, inspired by those existing in England and set according to the aesthetic movement of Arts and Crafts. In 1987, the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna has organized an exhibition entitled "Josef Hoffmann: Ornament zwischen Hoffnung und Verbrechen”.
